I decided I wanted to be a paralegal back when we didn't have the internet, computers or fax machines. Back then, there were no schools you could go to in order to learn how to be a paralegal. Nor were there even any paralegal associations back in the 1980's. This was when attorneys couldn't even advertise their services.
The legal system in LA in the 1980's was such where it was a "stepping stone" process to become an attorney. You'd start out as a legal secretary, and then move your way up to legal assistant. As you worked to become an attorney, you'd then do the paralegal work - which consisted of wading through libraries of books, articles, court cases, etc.
The legal field had "rock stars" you admired such as Gerry Spence, Melvin Belli, Marvin Mitchelson, etc. If you wanted to be trained as a paralegal back then, you had to find an attorney who saw your potential. So I went and found an attorney who had a law library in-house and agreed to train me. That showed how resourceful and determined I am.
After spending two years receiving this one-on-one training in all types of law because he had a general practice, I saw the invention of Court TV. The 90's saw some of the biggest cases in history on trial, and these firms needed trained litigation support because they were literally on display for the world back then.
I spent a few years working on some of these huge trials - and then came the 1990's. The legal field suddenly had to convert to a digital process. All the systems had to be converted so I found myself going from office to office assisting them with adopting these new systems such as adding computers and fax machines to their offices, which had now become computerized and connected to the internet. I got pregnant with my daughter in 1991, and decided I wanted to be a "stay at home" mom. By doing this office conversion work it allowed me to be home with my daughter after school.
This is when I started freelancing and working from home - so I could be with her as much as possible. She's now an adult and Covid has changed things in the legal field once again where even trials are being done remotely.
I'm now trying to find ways to support attorneys and firms with whatever their temporary, overflow and/or virtual needs are today. I will be returning to law school and working towards becoming an attorney now she's an adult and my family obligations have been fulfilled.
i've worked in a wide variety of areas of law, as well as many different courts and states - local, state, federal and supreme courts; civil and criminal; family law; landlord-tenant; bankruptcy; foreclosures; consumer law, etc.
If you need an attorney to appear for you at a hearing, or to review your filings, or if we just need to connect to an attorney for whatever reason - I have a list of many I've worked with other the years I can connect you with.
If you have a job that requires more than one paralegal, or I can't handle because of my schedule, I can connect you to other paralegals I know who are very good also.
If you just need a Legal Document Preparer and a receipt for those services to add to your costs to be reimbursed, I have some very good ones I can refer you to or work with together.
Maybe you need an expert to prove you had your signature forged, or a mortgage forensic analysis to show bank fraud, or you need to go deeper to prove someone is trying to defraud you by saying they have false injuries and you need a private investigator - in the three decades I've done this work I've come to know many experts and other professionals I can refer you to for whatever you need help with.
